Description of the Course

      The MBBS course is of 4 ½ academic years and is followed by one year of compulsory rotating internship. The period of 4 ½ years is divided into (9 semesters, each semester 6 months duration) three phases

      Phase I or the Pre-Clinical phase is of 13 months and is preceded by a one-month foundation course sensitizing students to the health situation in India, the role of doctors in the community and basic principles of Communication & Ethics. This phase comprises of Human Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry, Introduction to Community Medicine, Humanities, Professional Development, and early clinical exposure.

      At the end of Phase II or the Para-clinical phase (12 months) students will be assessed on the subjects Pharmacology, Pathology and Microbiology. At the end of Phase III part I (13 months) students will be assessed on Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, Ophthalmology and Oto-rhinolaryngology.

      2 months are allotted for elective rotations after the completion of Phase III part I examination and before the commencement of Phase III part II

       Phase III part II (13 months) includes General Medicine and allied specialities, General Surgery and allied specialities, Obstetrics & Gynaecology including Family Welfare and Pediatrics. A block posting in Community Health is an integral part of each stage. Posting in urban and rural health centres is a unique feature of medical education.

      The internship lasting for 12 months comprises of postings in Community Health, General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Emergency Medicine, and short electives in various specialities. All these are as per the guidelines of the National Medical Commission.
